Mohammed Lateef – 2nd Year ICAS Student
“I joined Scott-Moncrieff in January 2007 and I am currently in my second year of my CA training. As someone who has come from a non-relevant background, there was a steep learning curve when I first joined in order to get to grips with accountancy. However, the support that is given by all members of staff within the firm is brilliant with everyone willing to help you along the way. I have experienced a natural progression over the past couple of years, starting out as a senior on relatively small audits in first year and now having the responsibility of tackling bigger jobs.
Probably the best thing that I’ve found about working for Scott-Moncrieff is that your colleagues, be it a partner, manager or senior, all are quick to praise you when you have performed well leaving you with a great sense of self-satisfaction!”
Brian Krushave – 2nd Year ICAS Student
“I chose to train with Scott-Moncrieff as I liked the size and organisation of the firm. The firm has a good structure in place to help and assist me in passing my exams, including internal training, exam mentors and an internal secondment to our Business Advisory Group. I passed all of my ICAS exams at the TC level in the first attempt, as a result of the support and encouragement I received from Scott-Moncrieff.
I am very pleased with my time at Scott-Moncrieff so far, as I have had a chance to work with a wide variety of clients in different sectors. I have also been given a lot of responsibility very early on in my career which has really helped me develop professionally. I am already senioring my own jobs and dealing with clients independently more frequently.”

There are secondments opportunities overseas or in the UK. I am looking forward to a 6 month secondment in Hong Kong, Lorraine Brown, Audit Senior
Allison Gibson – Senior Manager Audit
"Graduating from Glasgow University I started my training with the firm in August 1998 and have worked within the Glasgow audit department ever since. After qualifying as a CA in 2001, by building upon the knowledge and experience gained through my ICAS training and on-the job work experience, I have moved up through the firm, first to the position of assistant manager, then to manager, and most recently, to senior manager. Each promotion has brought with it new challenges which help to keep the job interesting!
The fact that during my career I have been given the opportunity to work with clients within many different sectors, including commercial, charity and the public sector, allows me to continue to strengthen and grow both my technical and business knowledge. Although it’s a while ago I can remember the support I received as a trainee, but it didn’t stop there, as the firm recognises the importance of continual training in order to develop the potential of its staff."
Lorraine Brown –Audit Senior
"My CA training with Scott-Moncrieff has been an invaluable experience. I have mainly been involved in external audit (company, charity, pensions, and housing association audits), as well as in internal audit and the preparation of accounts for companies, partnerships and sole traders. I have experienced the audit of various industries, such as manufacturing, mining and quarrying, financial services, hotel and leisure, construction and retail.
The support and training received is extensive, with exam and study support readily available from mentors, fellow students and those that are qualified.
There are also opportunities for secondments either overseas or in the UK. I am looking forward to a 6 month secondment to Moore Stephens Hong Kong commencing in September 2009, which will further build on my client base and will be a new experience both socially and culturally.
John Boyd – 2nd Year CIPFA Student
“I joined Scott-Moncrieff in September 2006 after graduating from Strathclyde University with a degree in Mathematics, Statistics and Finance. Coming from a non-relevant course I had very little experience of accountancy and what to expect when starting a career in this field. Within a week of joining the organisation I knew that I had made the correct choice. Everyone from fellow first year students to Partners in the firm went out their way to welcome me.
As part of the Scott-Moncrieff Public Sector team I have had the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of audit work including local authority, health, central government and further education - download Public Sector Briefing - This variety has helped me develop my skills and understanding of public sector accountancy. The training programme has a clear structure for personal development and the range of work that you are exposed to ensures the work is always fresh and interesting.
Scott-Moncrieff has provided me with substantial support, both formal and informal, as I studied for my examinations. Learning materials, study leave as well as a programme of courses provided by the CIPFA Education and Training Centre provided an excellent foundation to my learning. Colleagues were always on hand to provide additional support and expertise whenever required. This support was certainly a key element to my success in my examinations in which I was fortunate enough to win National Awards for two exams.
There is a strong sense of being part of team when working for Scott-Moncrieff. This is evident when working as part of an audit team or taking part in a year group training course with fellow students. There is also a range of social activities organised by the firm including weekly 7-a-side football, rock climbing, and bowling and comedy club nights to name but a few.”
Robin Kirkwood – Corporate Finance Senior
"I joined Scott-Moncrieff’s audit department in 2005 after graduating from University, where I undertook a joint honours degree in Accounting and Economics. I had previously had no practical audit experience and therefore was pleased to find the staff very welcoming and encouraged me through my initial induction training. I also found that other new trainees eased the culture shock of moving from university to working life!
One of the things that attracted me to Scott-Moncrieff was that they offered me a vast amount of experience during my training contract, as I was given the opportunity to work on a wide range of audit clients, throughout a number of business sectors, such as Limited Companies, Housing Associations, Charities, Health Boards and Pension Schemes. This has given me a hugely varied insight into the mechanics of a number of different businesses and organisations.
Scott-Moncrieff also gave me a large amount of responsibility at an early stage, initially taking control of individual audit sections in my first year to being an audit senior for a small audit in my second year. By my third year of training I was an audit senior in charge of an audit team. I found this experience invaluable when undertaking my ICAS examinations.
Due to the fact that Scott-Moncrieff offers a wide range of services, they gave me the opportunity to diversify my training from purely audit, and I was given a short secondment to the Business Advisory department. This increased my overall technical skills, which I could transfer to my examinations. I have now successfully completed my training contract and through the range of services available from Scott-Moncrieff, I have moved to their Corporate Finance department."
